Give Dotsy your site's address and it imports the whole site into a draft: it finds your pages from the sitemap and the home page links, copies them with their images and files, and publishes nothing until you say so. Import is on every plan, including Free.
You can start the import from your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) or from the Dotsy command line. Your old site keeps running the whole time.
Steps
- Connect your AI to Dotsy if you haven't yet. It takes one URL: How do I connect Dotsy to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor?
- Ask it to import your site. For example: "Use the Dotsy connector to import my site yourcompany.com into Dotsy as a draft."
- Wait for the import. Your AI tells you when the pages are ready and gives you a draft preview link. Images and files can keep copying in the background for a little longer.
- Check the draft. Open the preview and click through your main pages. Your AI can also run Dotsy's checks for broken links, missing titles and heavy images.
- Choose how editable you want it. Dotsy first keeps an exact copy of each page. If you want, it can then turn your header and footer into shared sections you edit once for every page, and your blog into a collection. Your AI asks before doing this.
- Publish, then connect your domain: How do I connect my own domain to my Dotsy site?
Prefer the terminal? npx -y @dotsy-ai/cli@latest clone https://yourcompany.com copies the site to a folder, and dotsy push uploads it.
Which platforms import best?
| Where your site is now | What you get |
|---|---|
| WordPress, Webflow, Ghost, Joomla, Drupal, Carrd | A faithful copy that can also be turned into shared header, footer and blog collection |
| Wix, Squarespace, Framer, Duda, Weebly, HubSpot, GoDaddy Website Builder | A faithful copy of each page; making it fully editable works less reliably, so we recommend keeping the copy first |
| Shopify and other online shops | Pages are copied, but the shop itself (cart, checkout) doesn't come with it |
Sites that build their content with JavaScript are opened in a browser first, so the copy shows what visitors see.
Will I lose my Google rankings?
Not if your important addresses stay the same or redirect to the new page. Before you switch your domain:
- Check that your main pages answer at the same paths on the Dotsy draft.
- Add a 301 redirect for any page you renamed or dropped. Pages you rename inside Dotsy get one automatically.
- After the switch, submit your sitemap again: How do I add my Dotsy site to Google Search Console?
FAQ
Does importing change my current site?
No. Dotsy only reads your public pages. Nothing changes on your old host until you point your domain at Dotsy.
Is there a page limit?
Pages are unlimited on every plan. Free workspaces can add up to 2,000 new pages at once, then 200 more each day; paid plans have no daily limit.
Can I import a site I don't own?
Only import sites you have the right to copy. Dotsy refuses imports from banks, payment and sign-in pages of major brands.
What about my contact forms?
Forms are copied as they look, but they may still send to your old provider. Ask your AI to switch them to Dotsy forms, which email you each reply.
