Every Dotsy site is now easier for AI search to read
Every Dotsy site, on every plan including Free, now publishes an /llms.txt file, tells AI crawlers in robots.txt that they may read it, and serves a clean Markdown copy of each page to AI agents that ask for one. You don't need to set anything up: it happens when you publish.
More people now ask ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity instead of typing into Google, and those tools read websites in their own way. This release makes your site easy for them to find, read and quote, and shows you when they do.
What changed?
/llms.txton every site. Dotsy writes it each time you publish: your site's purpose, then every public page with its title and description, home page first. Pages you've hidden from search, redirects and your 404 page are left out. Want to write your own? Upload a file calledllms.txtand yours is used instead.- Clear signals for AI crawlers. The
robots.txtDotsy generates now carriesContent-Signal: search=yes, ai-input=yes, ai-train=yes, so crawlers know your content may be used for search and AI answers. - Markdown copies for AI agents. When an AI agent asks for a page as Markdown, it gets a clean text version without menus and footers. People visiting in a browser still get your normal page.
- Discovery links on every page. Live pages now point to
/llms.txtand/sitemap.xmlin aLinkheader, so agents find them without guessing. - Faster updates to search engines. After you publish, Dotsy sends the changed addresses to search engines that support IndexNow, and retries if the engine is busy.
- A check for a missing opening paragraph. The SEO checks now flag pages with no plain opening paragraph, because AI answers tend to quote the first clear sentence on a page.
Why does it matter?
AI answer tools work best with pages that say plainly what they are about, near the top, in text rather than images. Most small-business sites are built from big hero images and short slogans, so these tools have little to quote. Dotsy now handles the technical side for you, so your words are the only thing left to get right.
None of this guarantees that an AI tool will mention your business. It removes the technical reasons it might skip you.
How do I see whether AI tools visit my site?
Open your site's Analytics. Crawlers are now grouped as Search engines, AI search, AI assistants and AI training, and a new AI referrals card counts visits that came from AI chat sites such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai. The referral count comes from your top referrers, so a very small source may not show.
Do I need to do anything?
No. New sites get all of this on their first publish. Existing sites get /llms.txt the next time you publish, or from a background update we're running across all sites now.
If you want your site to do better in AI answers, start your important pages with one plain paragraph that says what you do, for whom and where. Our guide to adding your site to Google Search Console covers the search-engine side.
FAQ
What is llms.txt?
It's a plain-text file at the root of a website that lists its main pages with short descriptions, written for AI tools rather than people. It's a proposed convention, not a standard every AI tool reads, so treat it as a helpful signal rather than a switch.
Can I stop AI tools from training on my site?
Not with a setting yet. You can upload your own robots.txt that blocks training crawlers; Dotsy will warn you if a file you upload also blocks AI search crawlers, since that would keep you out of AI answers.
Does this cost extra?
No. It's on every plan, including Free.
Will my site look different?
No. Visitors in a browser see exactly the same pages. Only AI agents that ask for Markdown get the text version.
